Pino Gordo, Tourist attraction and tree in Vilaflor, Tenerife, Spain
The Pino Gordo is a very old Canarian pine tree growing in the Corona Forestal natural park near the village of Vilaflor in Tenerife. It stands around 145 ft (44 m) tall and has a massive, twisted trunk measuring over 29 ft (9 m) around at chest height.
The tree is estimated to be between 700 and 800 years old, which means it was already standing long before Spanish settlers arrived in Tenerife. Over the centuries it survived several fires and severe storms, traces of which are still visible on its trunk today.
The Pino Gordo appears on the coat of arms of Vilaflor, showing how central this tree is to the village's identity. Visitors can see the scars on its trunk left by fires and storms over the centuries.
The tree is easy to reach along a short path of about 650 ft (200 m) from the paved road, and there is parking nearby. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the ground can be slippery after rain.
Just a short distance away from the Pino Gordo stands the Pino de las Dos Pernadas, the tallest native pine in Spain at over 56 m (184 ft). Its name means 'pine with two legs' because the trunk splits into two large branches at around 33 ft (10 m) above the ground.
