Lake Akan Ainu Kotan, Ainu settlement and tourist attraction in Kushiro, Japan

Lake Akan Ainu Kotan is a traditional Ainu settlement on the shore of Lake Akan in Hokkaido, Japan. The village is made up of wooden buildings with thatched roofs, craft shops, a theater, and display spaces arranged along a short walkable street.

The craft shops in the village sell wood carvings and embroidered textiles made by Ainu artisans following traditional patterns. At the theater, performers in costumes made from natural materials stage dances and songs tied to stories about nature and ancestors.

The village is easy to reach by car from Kushiro Station or Kushiro Airport, with free parking available on site. The main street is short and flat, making the area straightforward to explore on foot, even for those with limited mobility.

Signs and displays throughout the village are written in both Japanese and the Ainu language, which is rarely seen in everyday life across Japan. This gives visitors a chance to encounter a language spoken today by only a very small number of people.
