Giant Tree of Shuishan Mt

The Giant Tree of Shuishan Mountain is an ancient red cypress located in a forest reserve within Alishan Township. It stands approximately 30 meters tall with a trunk circumference of about 16 meters, dominating the forest around it.

The tree was discovered by Japanese explorers in 1906 during their investigation of the mountain region. It was subsequently recognized as an important natural landmark within Taiwan's forest system.

The tree holds significance as a natural landmark that connects visitors to Taiwan's mountain heritage and forest traditions. People come here to witness a living symbol of the island's ancient woodland ecosystems.

Access is available via hiking trails from Alishan Forest Recreation Area, and visits are best made during daylight. Wear proper hiking footwear since the mountain paths can be steep and muddy.

Scientific research suggests this cypress may actually be two trees that have fused together rather than a single organism. This unusual union creates a rare botanical formation with an estimated combined age of around 1,650 years.
