Australia Rock
Australia Rock is a natural stone formation located near the coast at Narooma, featuring a large opening that resembles the map of Australia. The rock arch resulted from thousands of years of erosion caused by waves and wind gradually wearing away the stone.
The formation of the arch dates back several thousand years and was caused by constant action of ocean waves and wind. Some local stories mention an old ship whose chains rubbed the stone and may have created the hole.
The rock's name comes from its shape, which resembles the outline of the Australian continent. Visitors immediately recognize this similarity and use the spot to take photos that capture this natural connection to the map of the country.
The site is reached by a short walk from a nearby viewpoint called Bar Rock Lookout along a breakwall to the rocks. A wide path with stairs makes the location easy to access, and parking is available nearby.
Seals often rest on nearby rocks and use the warm stones for sunbaking. During certain seasons, visitors may also spot whales swimming close to the coast.
