Godshuis Spanoghe, Historic almshouse in Brugge, Belgium
The Godshuis Spanoghe features painted Flemish brick facades with arched doors, rectangular windows, and a continuous gabled roof along Katelijnestraat and Stoofstraat.
Founded in 1680 by Francesca Spanoghe, this almshouse provided shelter for elderly women and underwent significant renovations in 1939 under architect Maurice Vermeersch.
The building represents the tradition of charitable housing in medieval Flanders, where communities established dedicated spaces to support and protect vulnerable populations.
Visitors can access the property through a narrow basket arch gate on Katelijnestraat, which leads to a garden space behind the residential units.
Originally divided into six separate units, the almshouse structure now comprises four residences that maintain their historical connection to the adjacent Reie river.
