Kryt civilního obyvatelstva Parukářka, Cold War bunker in Parukarka district, Prague, Czech Republic.

The Kryt civilního obyvatelstva Parukářka is an underground shelter made of concrete with multiple rooms, ventilation systems, and emergency exits designed to protect people from nuclear attacks. The facility was carefully built and divided into sections that served different functions and safety systems.

The shelter was built in the 1950s as part of a large protection program meant to safeguard Prague from possible attacks. It played an important role during the turbulent events of 1968 when the city was occupied from outside.

The shelter shows how Czechs thought about safety during the Cold War and what mattered to them at that time. You can see how people wanted to protect themselves from nuclear danger and what solutions they built for it.

The visit is only possible with a guided tour and requires some physical fitness, as you go down stairs and walk through narrow passages. It makes sense to book ahead and bring warm clothing, since it is cool underground.

Inside there is an old radio broadcasting room that was once used to send important messages to the city during a difficult occupation. This shows how these places served not just for hiding but also for communicating during crisis.
