Rocher de la Guérite, Rock formation in Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel, France
The Rocher de la Guérite is a sandstone rock formation near the village of Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel in the northern Vosges. It sits at around 1,070 feet (327 m) above sea level, surrounded by forest and overlooking the wooded hills of the regional nature park.
The sandstone formations of the northern Vosges were shaped over hundreds of millions of years by wind and water erosion. The rock was long used as a landmark by hunters and farmers moving through the forest.
A trail passes by the formation and can be extended toward the Gros Chêne, a very old oak tree a short walk away. The path is not difficult, but caution is advised near the edges of the cliffs where the ground can be uneven.
The nearby Gros Chêne, reachable along the trail from the rock, grew around the year 1600 and has a trunk measuring over 20 feet (6 m) around. It is one of the oldest protected trees in the region and is often a highlight of the walk.
