Abbaye de Neuwiller-lès-Saverne

The Abbaye de Neuwiller-lès-Saverne is a Benedictine monastery with two churches, where the main one combines architectural elements from the Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque periods. The complex features a prominent bell tower and rooms housing artworks and religious objects.

Saint Sigibald, a bishop of Metz, founded this religious center in 723. The monastery grew to control significant territories on both sides of the Vosges mountains, becoming an important destination for worshippers.

The monastery displays devotion to Saint Adelphus through religious artworks and relics that visitors can encounter inside. These objects tell of the spiritual importance this place held for pilgrims over the centuries.

Visitors should start outside the complex to view the exterior structure before moving indoors. Guided tours are organized by the Patrimoine de Neuwiller-lès-Saverne association, which provides access to different areas and interior rooms.

The monastery housed a significant collection of relics of Saint Adelphus that attracted so many pilgrims that a second church had to be built during the Middle Ages. This additional church was needed to accommodate all the visitors who came to venerate the saint's remains.
