Adam Mickiewicz, tomb in Montmorency, France
The Adam Mickiewicz tomb is a stone stele in the Montmorency cemetery, France. It features a bronze medallion with a bust of the poet, set into a pale grey slab with a curved top.
Mickiewicz was buried here in 1856, after dying in Constantinople. His remains were moved to Wawel Cathedral in 1890, but the tomb remains as a memorial.
The tomb is a place of remembrance for Poles, who often visit to honor the poet. The medallion, created by sculptor Antoine-Augustine Préault, is considered a masterpiece of Romantic sculpture.
The cemetery is located on Boulevard des Champeaux in Montmorency, easily reached by car or public transport from Paris. Visitors should respect the quiet environment and be aware that some areas may be under restoration.
The medallion depicts the poet in a state of agony, a bold choice for its time. It was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1868 and praised by Émile Zola.
