Abbaye du Thoronet, Cistercian monastery in Le Thoronet, France

The Abbaye du Thoronet is a Romanesque Cistercian monastery dating from the late 12th and early 13th century, set in wooded land in the Var department between Draguignan and Brignoles. The church, cloister, chapter house, and service buildings are all built from plain fitted stone, with no carvings or ornaments on the walls.

Monks from the monastery of Mazan arrived at this site in the 1140s and soon began building the church and surrounding structures. By the 14th and 15th centuries monastic life had weakened due to wars and plagues, and by the late 18th century the last monks had left, after which the buildings were used as storage and stables before the state purchased the site in the 19th century and began restoration work.

The abbey is known for its acoustics, and during summer months Gregorian chant concerts are held inside the church, where the sound travels through the stone walls in a way that feels immediate. Visitors can also notice how the cloister follows the natural slope of the ground, giving it a slightly irregular shape that sets it apart from other monasteries of the same period.

The abbey is easy to reach by car from a highway exit nearby, and there is parking on site. The interior spaces can be dimly lit, so wearing good footwear for uneven stone floors makes the visit more comfortable.

In the south wall of the church there is a small recess where villagers could leave the bodies of their dead for a blessing, without the monks having to touch them. This detail shows how strictly the monks followed their rules of separation even when serving the local community.
