Newgate Market
Newgate Market is an open-air market in the centre of York, England, set on a cobbled square behind Parliament Street. The stalls are arranged in rows and sell fresh food, meat, bread, flowers, jewellery, and crafts, with a mix of permanent traders and occasional vendors side by side.
York is one of the oldest market towns in England, with trading activity going back to Roman times. The market moved to its current site in 1964 and was renamed Shambles Market after a redesign in 2014.
The market sits just behind the Shambles, one of the most visited medieval streets in England, and many people stumble upon it while walking through that area. The mix of local traders and visiting vendors gives the place an everyday character that feels more like a neighbourhood market than a tourist stop.
The market is easy to reach on foot and sits within steps of some of the most visited lanes and squares in the city centre. A visit pairs well with a walk through the Shambles area and the surrounding streets, as everything is close together.
Although the market is now widely known as Shambles Market, its official name remains Newgate Market, taken from the nearby street. This gap between the official and the popular name often catches visitors off guard when they search for it on a map.
