Elektrociepłownia Szombierki, Historic industrial complex in Szombierki, Bytom, Poland
Elektrociepłownia Szombierki is a historic brick industrial complex in the Szombierki district of Bytom, Poland. It consists of a boiler house, a water tower, and several tall chimneys that make the site visible from a distance.
The complex was built between 1917 and 1920 to supply electricity and heat to nearby factories and homes. In 2011, energy production stopped, and the site became a protected monument.
The site is part of the Technical Monuments Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship, and guided tours and cultural events are held there from time to time. It is worth checking in advance for current visiting options, as not all areas are open at all times.
The main buildings were designed by architects Georg and Emil Zillmann, who included a clock tower on the water tank that can still be seen today. In the 1930s, the tallest of the three chimneys reached 120 meters (about 394 feet), making the complex one of the largest of its kind in Europe at the time.
