Fakıllı Mağarası, Natural cave in Akçakoca, Turkey
Fakıllı Mağarası is a natural cave in the village of Fakıllı, near Akçakoca in the Düzce province of Turkey. It runs about 1,150 feet (350 meters) deep and is made up of several chambers connected by passages, with a small stream flowing through part of it.
The cave formed over thousands of years as water slowly dissolved the limestone rock from within. It has long been known to people in the area and appears in local stories before it was opened to visitors in more recent times.
Just outside the cave stands a large rock called Fakıllı Kayası, where visitors tie ribbons and make wishes. Many locals also believe that the cool, damp air inside helps with breathing problems, and some people visit for that reason alone.
Sturdy shoes with a good grip are a must since the floor inside can be slippery, especially after rain. A flashlight is worth bringing even though the main path is partly lit, as some corners stay quite dark.
The cave stays cool all year, which makes it a natural refuge on hot summer days along the Black Sea coast. Near the entrance there is a small rest area with benches and a samovar where visitors can drink tea after their walk inside.
