Love Valley, also known as Bağlıdere Valley, is a natural valley near Göreme in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, filled with tall, pointed rock pillars called fairy chimneys. These columns were shaped over millions of years by volcanic ash deposits gradually worn down by wind and rain.
The landscape was shaped by a massive volcanic eruption millions of years ago that blanketed the region with layers of ash and lava. Over time, softer rock eroded away while harder basalt caps protected the columns beneath, leaving behind the tall pillars visible today.
The valley is free to enter and open at all hours, but sturdy shoes and water are essential since the terrain can be rocky and uneven. Early morning is the best time to go, as the light is softer and the midday heat in summer can be intense.
The valley's official Turkish name is Bağlıdere, which simply means 'valley with vineyards.' The name most visitors know came later, chosen because of the unmistakable shape of the rock columns.
