Dios los Cría y el Viento los Amontona is a restaurant on Calle San Agustín, in the old center of La Orotava, in the north of Tenerife. The space inside is compact, with around a dozen tables, plus a few more seats on the pavement outside.
The restaurant is a recent addition to La Orotava, but it has quickly become a known spot among locals and travelers. Its approach of using traditional Canarian ingredients in a more creative way reflects a culinary shift that has grown across the island in recent years.
The name of the restaurant, which translates roughly as "God raises them and the wind brings them together", is a humorous Spanish saying about chance encounters. One of the interior walls is covered with eye-catching paintings that visitors tend to notice right away.
Because the space is small, booking a table in advance is a good idea, especially on weekends. Parking in the old center of La Orotava can be tricky, but there are public parking areas near the Auditorio Teobaldo Power, a short walk away.
On at least one occasion, a staff member proactively suggested that a table cancel one of their dishes because it would be too much food. This kind of honest attention is rarely seen in restaurants. The tiramisu is served with a small pot of freshly brewed coffee on the side, which diners pour over the dessert themselves.
