Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites, Naval complex in Saint Paul Parish, Antigua and Barbuda
The Antigua Naval Dockyard is a naval base with deep harbors, stone buildings, and maritime facilities spread across a large coastal area. The complex includes dry docks, storage buildings, quarters, and fortifications that together formed a working naval center.
The British established this naval base in 1704 as a strategic Caribbean outpost and built it with forced labor as a ship repair center. The site grew over two centuries and became the main British naval hub in the western Caribbean.
The dockyard shows how craftspeople and sailors lived and worked here daily, with preserved quarters and workshops scattered across the grounds. You can see in these buildings how people from different backgrounds worked together in this naval community.
The site is easy to explore on foot with marked paths through different areas and information boards at key spots. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when it is cooler and the light is better.
The natural landscape with steep hills and protected bays provided a natural shield against hurricanes, making this position particularly valuable for the Navy. This geographical feature determined the entire fate of the location as a strategic hub.
