Capilla Santa Gemma, Catholic chapel on El Calvario hill in Tandil, Argentina.
Capilla Santa Gemma is a small chapel on El Calvario hill built entirely from local granite stone. The entrance features three Roman arches that lead into a modest atrium.
This chapel opened on January 12, 1947, as the first sanctuary in the Americas devoted to Saint Gemma Galgani. Its establishment marked a new religious site for the veneration of this saint.
Local artisans from Tandil shaped every element of this chapel by hand, using materials found in the region. The granite work reflects the skill and dedication of these craftspeople.
The site sits on a hilltop and is reachable on foot but exposed to weather elements. Wear sturdy shoes and expect uneven ground when you visit.
The roof is covered with French slate tiles, an unusual choice for such a small chapel far from major cities. In the altar area, two relief windows with lily designs were crafted by a local artist.
