Jagdschloss Hochalm

Jagdschloss Hochalm is a hunting estate situated at 1200 meters (3940 feet) elevation on a mountain ridge descending from Wetterkogel in Styria. The property encompasses forested slopes and rugged terrain characteristic of the Alpine region.

The estate developed as a hunting property for the Mayr-Melnhof family and has remained integral to their extensive forestry holdings in the region for generations. It gained international attention in the 1960s during a significant diplomatic visit.

The lodge represents a living tradition of alpine hunting that continues to shape how the surrounding mountains are used and valued. Visitors can sense the deep connection between the estate and the forested landscape around it.

The estate sits in high alpine terrain and is best reached on foot via marked hiking trails that traverse the mountainous landscape. Visitors should prepare for steep and demanding conditions with appropriate gear.

A former head huntsman of the estate founded a hunting horn band in 1975 that continues to define the musical character of the place. This brass music tradition weaves together local customs with Alpine hunting culture.
