Tafamuntbahn, Cable car in Partenen, Austria
Tafamuntbahn is an aerial lift that rises from the valley floor in Partenen through mountain terrain to reach a high alpine meadow. It carries passengers through a series of support structures and spans a considerable vertical distance to connect lower and upper elevations.
The lift was built in 1963 to serve workers during the construction of a hydroelectric facility in the mountains. It later received major upgrades to improve safety and capacity for the growing number of hikers.
The Illwerke Park Partenen, established in 2010 near the valley station, spans 10,000 square meters and serves as a recreational area for visitors and locals.
The journey takes a few minutes as the cabin ascends along cable routes supported by sturdy pylons. Wear sturdy footwear and check weather conditions at higher elevations before your visit, as conditions change quickly in the mountains.
Passengers can exit at the intermediate station on the support structure without advance notice, but continuing to the upper station requires a specific request. This gives visitors flexibility to break their journey or decide on the spot how far they want to go.
