Vermuntbahn, Cable car in Gaschurn, Austria.
The Vermuntbahn is an aerial lift in Gaschurn, a village in the Montafon valley of Austria's Vorarlberg region, linking a valley station to a mountain station above. The line runs about 1,300 meters (4,265 ft) and covers a vertical rise of around 700 meters (2,300 ft).
The Vermuntbahn opened in 1994, creating a direct link between the village of Gaschurn and the slopes above. Its opening allowed the Silvretta Montafon ski area to expand and attract more visitors over the following years.
The lift connects Gaschurn village to the Silvretta Montafon ski area and is the main entry point for winter sports visitors arriving from the valley. Once at the top, skiers and snowboarders fan out across a network of runs that draw people from across Europe each season.
The valley station sits right in the center of Gaschurn, so it is easy to reach on foot from most of the village. Warm layers are worth bringing, since the temperature at the top is noticeably lower than in the valley below.
The Vermuntbahn uses a reversible ropeway design, meaning two cabins move in opposite directions at the same time, one going up while the other comes down. This layout keeps the line running smoothly even during busy periods, without the delays that a single-cabin system would cause.
