Belvoir, Theatre company in Surry Hills, Sydney, Australia
Belvoir is a theatre company in Surry Hills, Sydney, operating out of a former factory building that now contains two performance spaces. The larger stage sits upstairs and holds around 330 seats, while the smaller downstairs space fits roughly 80.
The company was founded in 1984 when around 600 supporters pooled their money to buy the factory building and set up two separate bodies, one to own the property and one to run the productions. That founding structure gave the organization a cooperative character from the very start.
Belvoir regularly stages productions by Indigenous Australian writers and directors alongside contemporary and classical works. Seeing a show here gives a sense of how Australian storytelling has developed its own voice over the decades.
The theatre sits in the middle of Surry Hills and is easy to reach by foot, bus, or train from central Sydney. Both spaces tend to sell out for popular shows, so booking in advance is a good idea.
From its founding until 2011, every person working at the theatre received the same hourly pay, whether they were a director, a technician, or a cleaner. That policy was rare in the performing arts world and drew attention well beyond Sydney.
