Canberra light rail network, Light rail system in Canberra, Australia
The Canberra light rail network is a modern public transport system that runs approximately 12 kilometers from Gungahlin to the city center. It uses modern trams with multiple doors, air conditioning, and dedicated spaces for bicycles on board.
The network opened in 2019 and marked a turning point in the city's public transport, which had previously relied almost entirely on buses. The first phase of expansion was completed in 2021 with the addition of further stations.
The network connects residential areas to the city center and is used by locals for daily commuting between neighborhoods. The stations integrate into the urban landscape and shape the character of the streets they run through.
The trams are accessible to all passengers, with wide doors and ramps for wheelchair users plus space for strollers and luggage. The stops are clearly marked, and the vehicles run at regular intervals during the day.
The Sandford Street stop in Mitchell was added late in the first construction phase, showing how the project adapted its original plans. Despite early budget concerns, costs were ultimately kept below initial estimates.
