Pinacotheca, Melbourne, Contemporary art gallery in Richmond, Melbourne, Australia
Pinacotheca was a contemporary art gallery in Richmond, Melbourne, housed in a converted factory building on Waltham Place. It provided large open spaces that could accommodate extensive art installations and exhibitions.
Bruce Pollard founded the gallery in 1967 at St Kilda and moved it to Richmond in 1970. It operated continuously in this location until closing in 2002.
The gallery championed minimalist and conceptual art, displaying works from more than 300 artists including Peter Booth and Bill Henson. It presented these pieces with minimal official documentation, reflecting its independent approach to how art should be shown and experienced.
The location occupies a former industrial building with generous layouts and high ceilings, making it easy to navigate and experience the exhibitions. The space was designed for viewing rather than comfort, with minimal signage and a straightforward layout for visitors to explore at their own pace.
The gallery participated in the groundbreaking 'The Field' exhibition, displaying works from 15 artists simultaneously with the National Gallery of Victoria. This collaboration demonstrated that it held significant influence over Australia's art scene and was regarded as an equal to major cultural institutions.
