Holden Fisherman's Bend plant, Former automotive manufacturing plant in Fishermans Bend, Victoria, Australia.
Holden Fisherman's Bend was a large industrial facility spanning 20 hectares with assembly lines, engineering departments, and administration buildings for vehicle and component manufacturing. Production ceased in 2020 and the grounds are being repurposed for new uses.
The facility was established in 1936 and reached a turning point in 1948 when it produced the first vehicle to carry the Holden brand name. This accomplishment helped establish domestic automotive manufacturing as a major industry in Australia.
The site was a major employer for generations of workers in the area, shaping family histories and local identities. Former employees maintain close bonds through reunion groups and gatherings, keeping alive the stories of what they built here.
The site is located on Salmon Street and can be reached by public transport or car. Visitors should know that the grounds are still undergoing transformation and access to certain areas may be limited.
The plant manufactured not just for the local market but also produced engines and components destined for global export. The Family II engine series, built from 1981 onward, reached vehicles across multiple continents.
