Melbourne Markets, Wholesale produce market in Epping, Australia.
Melbourne Markets is a wholesale market in Epping, a suburb north of the city, with dedicated sections for fruit, vegetables, and flowers. It brings together over 300 trading stands and around 160 permanent shops under one large covered site.
The market moved to Epping in 2015 after spending many years at Footscray Road. Before that, it had earlier roots at the Queen Victoria Market and the Western Market on Collins Street.
The market is a place where growers and buyers meet face to face in the early hours, often building long-term trading relationships. Retail shop owners from across the city come here regularly to fill their shelves with fresh produce.
The best time to visit is in the early morning, when trading is at its peak and the range of products on offer is at its widest. The site is easiest to reach by car, and parking is available directly on the grounds.
The site collects rainwater and generates solar power as part of a plan to recycle around 95 percent of its waste. Very few central markets anywhere in the world operate at this level of environmental awareness in their day-to-day running.
