La Barette camping, Mountain campground in Le Pont-de-Montvert, France
La Barette is a campground located at about 1,220 meters (4,000 feet) elevation in the Cévennes mountains with approximately 30 pitches separated by natural granite blocks. The site spans roughly 10,000 square meters (2.5 acres) of mountain terrain and features modern facilities including bathrooms and electrical hookups.
The site sits along the GR70 hiking trail, famously known as the Robert Louis Stevenson path, which follows the author's 1878 journey through the Cévennes. This historic route connects the campground to a literary legacy that continues to draw walkers to the region.
The area maintains a heritage of mountain farming where local producers continue making cheese using traditional methods passed down through families. Visitors can experience this rural identity through the working farms and food culture that shapes the landscape around the campsite.
The campground is located high in the mountains and is best visited during the warmer months from May to September when weather conditions are most stable. Vehicle access is available, and facilities are suited to visitors with different camping needs.
The campground uses naturally occurring granite blocks to divide individual pitches rather than constructing artificial barriers. This design approach allows campers to blend seamlessly with the surrounding mountain environment while still maintaining privacy between sites.
