Barques des Hortillonnages - Le Jardin des Vertueux

The Jardin des Vertueux extends across 28,000 square meters of land divided by waterways, creating a network of 65 kilometers of navigable channels.

The gardens originated in medieval times when local farmers transformed marshlands into productive agricultural plots using an intricate system of water channels.

Local gardeners, known as hortillons, maintain traditional agricultural methods by cultivating vegetables and selling their produce at the weekly market in Saint-Leu district.

Electric boat tours depart from the garden between March and October, offering guided visits lasting from 50 minutes to 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The garden includes parcels managed by volunteer residents who focus on organic cultivation, ecological preservation, and educational programs about sustainable agriculture.
