Kiku, Japanese restaurant in the 9th arrondissement, Paris
Kiku is a Japanese izakaya restaurant in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, on rue de Montyon. The dining room has stone walls, wooden furniture, and soft lighting, and the overall layout is small and simple.
The restaurant first opened around 15 years ago on rue Richer in the same arrondissement. After closing for a period, it reopened on rue de Montyon, with the owners calling it version 2.0.
Kiku follows the izakaya format, a Japanese style of eating where small shared plates are ordered alongside sake and conversation. The paper origami hanging from the ceiling is one of the most visible Japanese touches in the dining room.
The restaurant sits near the Grands Boulevards area, making it easy to reach by metro. Lunch service offers a shorter and more affordable menu, while evenings are geared toward sharing several small plates.
The restaurant is run by three sisters, one of whom trained with Thierry Marx at the Mandarin Oriental and now works the stove while the other two run the dining room. This family setup is not obvious when you walk in, but it shapes everything about the place.
