À la mère de famille, Historic confectionery and chocolate shop in the 9th arrondissement, Paris
The fine grocery store "À la mère de famille" is a confectionery and chocolate shop in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, open since 1761 on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre. The interior features original wooden furniture, cement tile floors, and glass jars that have remained largely unchanged over the centuries.
The shop was founded in 1761 by a young merchant from Coulommiers who began by selling spices and sweets on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre. In the 19th century, Georges Lecoeur redesigned the green-and-gold facade and introduced imported goods such as teas from China and candied fruits from abroad.
The bottle-green facade with gilded glass decorations has long been a landmark on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre. Inside, wooden shelves and jars filled with candies create a setting that generations of Parisians have grown up with.
The shop sits on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement, which is easy to reach by metro. Opening hours may change around public holidays, so it is worth checking before you go.
In 2017, the company acquired Stohrer, a pastry shop founded in 1730 and therefore older than the shop itself. The two businesses now share a location in the 7th arrondissement, where their separate traditions continue side by side.
