Gurumê, Restaurant in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Gurumê is a Japanese and Asian fusion restaurant in the Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, with a casual dining room and sushi bar. The space has a simple, clean look with wooden details, where some guests sit at tables while others watch chefs prepare fish behind the counter.
Gurumê opened its doors in 2014 on Rua Aníbal de Mendonça, a commercial street in Ipanema. In the years since, its menu has been renewed twice annually to follow seasonal produce and new ideas from the kitchen team.
The restaurant's name comes from the Japanese word for a person who loves food. In the dining room, sharing several plates among friends or family is common, and a warm cup of green tea often accompanies the meal.
It is wise to reserve a table before going, since the dining room fills up quickly on weekends and in the evening. People who prefer a quieter meal often choose to sit away from the sushi bar, closer to the windows along the street.
Many guests do not expect to find tucupi, a fermented liquid made from wild manioc root, used in the ramen broth. Cupuaçu, a fruit from the Amazon, also appears in one of the chocolate desserts.
