Place de l'Ancienne Douane

Place de l'Ancienne Douane is a public square in central Colmar lined with traditional Alsatian buildings featuring half-timbered walls and terracotta roofs. A fountain sits at the center of the square, which opens onto nearby shopping streets and dining venues.

The Koïfhus customs house was constructed in the 15th century and served as a meeting point for members of the Decapolis, an alliance of ten regional towns. Over time, the square became a central marketplace supporting the city's trade and commerce.

The square takes its name from the former customs house, reflecting Colmar's past role in regional trade. Today, locals and visitors gather here to dine at nearby restaurants and experience the everyday rhythm of this central gathering space.

The square is fully pedestrian-friendly and easy to reach from nearby shopping streets like Grand-Rue and Rue des Marchands. Multiple restaurants and cafés surround the space, offering shaded seating areas and outdoor dining options.

The Schwendi Fountain at the center was installed in the late 19th century to commemorate a notable regional figure. The bronze sculpture incorporates symbols from the region's past, reflecting the artistic values of that era.
