Cap De Formentor, Mountain road in Pollença, Spain
Cap de Formentor road is a dramatic mountain route on Mallorca that winds for approximately 36 kilometers with numerous steep sections and tight curves along limestone cliffs. It connects Pollença to the island's northernmost tip.
The road was built in 1863 to connect the mainland settlement with the lighthouse, which improved maritime safety in the Mediterranean. This was a major engineering undertaking for the region at the time.
The road draws cyclists from around the world who view it as a demanding test of their riding ability. Many visit specifically for this physical challenge.
From June to September, the road is closed to vehicles between 10:00 and 22:30, with shuttle buses running from Port de Pollença. Plan to drive early or visit outside peak summer months to avoid crowds.
A tunnel was carved through the cliff to provide passage for cyclists and drivers, with lighting for safe transit. This underground section stands out as one of the route's most striking features.
