Grand Tour of Switzerland, Car and train route network in Switzerland.
The Grand Tour of Switzerland is a network of roads and train lines linking major cities, mountain passes, lakes, and valleys across the country. The system covers over 1600 kilometers and allows visitors to explore its many sections independently at their own pace.
The route follows ancient trading paths that have connected Swiss regions since medieval times, particularly through the famous Gotthard Pass. These corridors were later developed into modern roads and railways, creating a unified journey today.
The route passes through four language zones where travelers encounter German, French, Italian, and Romansh traditions expressed in villages, local food, and daily customs. The shift in how people speak, eat, and build their homes becomes noticeable as you move from one region to another.
Visitors can start the journey at any point along the route with access to frequent train services and designated parking at key locations throughout. It helps to research the different sections beforehand since some mountain areas may have seasonal access restrictions.
The network passes through or near 13 UNESCO World Heritage sites and includes access points to roughly 22 lakes along its course. This rare concentration of protected places and water bodies makes the journey exceptionally varied with multiple highlights.
