Ancient Gerulata Rusovce

Ancient Gerulata Rusovce is a Roman military settlement in Slovakia that preserves the ground-level remains of fortress walls, barracks, and other structures from the first four centuries. The site displays how such a border camp was laid out, with foundations and partial walls still visible across the excavated ground.

The settlement was established to guard the Roman border and served as a defensive point in the chain of fortifications between two major military camps. Later populations left their own marks on the site before it was eventually abandoned.

The site displays items that soldiers used daily, from bronze vessels to ceramic goods, revealing how they worked and lived at this border post. Seeing these objects among the actual ruins of their buildings creates a direct connection to their world.

The site is open from April to October, with archaeological remains scattered across different areas of the grounds. Wearing sturdy shoes is useful since paths cross uneven terrain and surfaces can be rough underfoot.

Archaeologists discovered graves here from a later period, showing that people continued to live at this spot after the Romans left. A brick bearing the mark of a mounted cavalry unit reveals which specific military forces were stationed at this location.
