Great Bay Beach

Great Bay Beach is a sandy shoreline in Philipsburg with white sand and clear water that stretches for two miles along the coast. The water is shallow and calm, making it suitable for swimming and water activities.

The beach played a role in the salt trade during the 17th century, and Fort Amsterdam was built in 1631 to guard harbor operations. This early military presence shaped how the port and surrounding settlements developed.

The waterfront serves as a meeting place where locals and travelers gather at restaurants and vendor stalls selling Caribbean food and crafts. Throughout the day, you can watch people enjoying meals together and browsing the shops that line the shore.

Beach chairs, umbrellas, and shower and restroom facilities are available for rent at various spots along the shore. The area is easy to reach, and visiting in the early morning or late afternoon helps you avoid the heat.

The beach offers direct views of enormous cruise ships entering the harbor, a spectacular sight for anyone watching from shore. Brown Pelicans also nest in the cliffs near the fort and can be spotted regularly throughout the day.
