Fort Amsterdam, Military fort on the Caribbean coast of Philipsburg, Sint Maarten
Fort Amsterdam is a fortification located on a rocky outcrop along the coast of Philipsburg, positioned between two natural bays. The structure features stone walls and period cannons arranged along its defensive perimeter.
Dutch colonists built this military outpost in 1631 as a strategic foothold in the Caribbean. Control of the fort changed hands among European powers until a 1648 partition agreement established the borders we see today.
The fort reflects the meeting point of different European powers that competed for control in these waters. You can sense how this shared colonial history shaped what stands here today.
The fort is open daily and welcomes visitors to walk around the fortification walls, read historical information boards, and view the cannons from different angles. Open grounds and several viewpoints offer clear sightlines across the coast and bays.
This was the first Dutch military base anywhere in the Caribbean, and its establishment led directly to the founding of other colonial settlements across the region. This early role made it a pivotal point in European expansion during the 1600s.
