Jardin des Arènes de Montmartre, Amphitheater and garden in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, France
The Jardin des Arènes de Montmartre is an amphitheater and garden located on the slope of the Butte Montmartre, in the Clignancourt neighborhood of the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It features stone steps arranged around a central open area, surrounded by trees, shrubs, and a few fruit trees and small vines.
The garden was created in 1941 by a local group called Les P'tits Poulbots, named after a cartoonist known for drawing street children of Montmartre. The group built the arena as a tribute to ancient Rome, on land that had previously been used for farming, mainly apple trees.
The Jardin des Arènes de Montmartre is used for concerts, theater performances, and city events that open it to the public on select occasions. Visitors who attend these events find a space that feels older than it actually is, thanks to its Roman-style stone layout.
The garden is not open every day and is best visited during events organized by the city or local groups, as regular access is limited. It can be reached on foot from the main streets of the Clignancourt neighborhood, via Rue Chappe.
The olive trees now growing in the garden replaced the apple trees that once covered the land before construction began. Although the design evokes ancient Roman architecture, the site dates from the 20th century, making it far younger than the Arènes de Lutèce across town.
