Hawa Beach
Hawa Beach is a sandy shoreline near Thiruvananthapuram, in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Coconut palms run along the edge of the sand, and small food stalls are scattered close to the water.
In the 1970s the beach became a stopping point for travelers following the coast of Kerala. Before that, the shore was known mainly to local fishing communities that have worked this stretch of coastline for generations.
The name comes from the Hindi word for wind or breeze, which describes what you feel the moment you step onto the shore. Fishermen arrive before sunrise and spread their nets along the water's edge, a routine that continues regardless of the visitors around them.
The beach is a short ride from the center of Thiruvananthapuram and easy to reach by auto-rickshaw or local bus. Mornings and late afternoons are good times to visit, as the midday sun can be strong.
The strongest wind arrives in the late afternoon, and locals say this is the moment the beach feels most like its name. At night, moonlight on the pale sand makes evening walks feel different from most other beaches along this coast.
