The Grande Plage des Sables d'Olonne is a sandy beach on the Atlantic coast of the Vendée region in western France, running along the edge of the town. It faces south, with a gently sloping sandy bottom that keeps the waves manageable most of the year.
Les Sables d'Olonne grew as a seaside resort during the 19th century, when bathing in the sea became fashionable among French society and drew visitors from far away. The Remblai promenade and the beach facilities were gradually built up to welcome the growing number of guests.
The Grande Plage runs alongside a wide seafront promenade locally known as the Remblai, which is a central part of daily life in the town. On summer evenings, street musicians and food sellers set up along it, and locals come to walk and watch the sea.
Arriving early in the morning during summer is a good idea, as the beach fills up quickly and nearby parking gets busy fast. Lifeguards are on duty during high season and watch over marked swimming zones, so it helps to stay within those areas.
A natural sandbank offshore acts as a shield against strong winds from the northwest, which gives the water here calmer conditions than at many other beaches along this stretch of the Atlantic coast. This makes it one of the few spots on this coastline where beginner surfers can practice in relatively sheltered water.
