Praia do Ancão, Beach in Almancil, Portugal.
Praia do Ancao is a beach stretching roughly 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) along the western edge of Ria Formosa Natural Park, with golden sand and natural dune formations throughout. Wooden boardwalks lead to the shore and protect the dunes, while sun lounger rentals and lifeguard services operate during summer months.
The beach became a notable destination during the 1960s tourism boom in the Algarve region. This period led to the establishment of prestigious resorts in the surrounding area.
Two restaurants perched above the dunes serve traditional Portuguese seafood and draw locals and visitors year-round. Their location overlooking the lagoon makes them popular gathering spots for casual meals.
The beach is easily reached via wooden boardwalks that also provide access for less mobile visitors while protecting the sensitive dune landscape. Arriving early in the morning helps you enjoy quieter hours before crowds build up.
The protected dunes host a range of wildlife including chameleons and different bird species that visitors can spot with careful observation. Along the eastern mudflats near Quinta do Lago, otters occasionally appear for those watching patiently.
