Calilla del Playazo

Calilla del Playazo is a sandy cove along the Níjar coastline featuring fossil dunes and direct Mediterranean access. The beach stretches naturally along the shore within Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

The cove developed as a natural coastal section while San Ramon fortress was built in 1764 under King Carlos III to prevent attacks. This defensive structure shaped the region's history across generations.

The cove is part of a fishing community where traditional practices shape daily life along the coast. These local activities demonstrate a long-standing relationship between the people and the Mediterranean.

A stone path descends from the parking area to reach the cove, and the route is straightforward to follow. The beach itself has no commercial facilities, but a short walk connects it to the nearby Playazo de Rodalquilar.

The cove contains a natural rocky formation with an opening leading to an underwater cave system. Divers can explore this hidden feature and gain insight into the geological character of the area.
