Playa Costambar, Beach in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
Playa Costambar is a sandy beach on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, within the residential community of Costambar near Puerto Plata. The shoreline curves gently, with soft golden sand and calm Atlantic waters that stay shallow close to shore.
The name Costambar comes from the word for amber, a reference to the time when this region was known for mining and trading the yellow gemstone. The beach area remained largely undeveloped for many years, keeping the low-key character it still has today.
The beach is a short ride from central Puerto Plata and can be reached by taxi, rental car, or local minibus. A few small restaurants and chair rentals are available on site, so bringing your own food and drinks is optional.
At low tide, the water pulls back far enough to reveal shallow rock pools where small sea creatures become visible close to shore. This means every visit looks a little different depending on when you arrive.
