Dryndek, Dwarf statue in Stare Miasto, Wrocław, Poland.

Description

Dryndek is a bronze statue at knee height located near the Hansel and Gretel houses in the Old Town. The figure adds character to the paved streets and is one of many public artworks in the city center.

History

The statue was installed in January 2008 and belongs to a collection that emerged from the Orange Alternative, a movement that resisted communist censorship in the 1980s. This art form gave people a creative way to express themselves when open criticism was forbidden.

Culture

This figure joins a collection of over 600 dwarf sculptures across Wrocław that represent the krasnoludek from Polish folklore. The bronze statues are scattered throughout the city center and show how the city keeps its local tradition alive through public art installations.

Practical

The statue is easily reached on foot and sits on a busy route through the Old Town. Many visitors use city maps or mobile apps to explore all the dwarf figures, creating a fun adventure through the paved streets.

Did you know?

The bronze statue is fully wheelchair accessible, showing that the entire collection across the city was designed with inclusion in mind. This makes Dryndek part of an art project that treats accessibility as a natural part of public space.
