Lac de Virlay, Recreational lake in Saint-Amand-Montrond, France.
Lac de Virlay is a man-made lake covering approximately 40 hectares near Saint-Amand-Montrond, with a 4-kilometer walking loop around it. The path includes several access points and information boards positioned along the shore.
The lake was created in the early 2000s as part of water management for the region. It was later developed into a recreation area offering water sports and outdoor activities.
The lake serves as a gathering place where locals come to fish, walk, and spend time outdoors with family and friends. Its accessible shoreline makes it a natural hub for community recreation and outdoor activities.
The site is easy to reach on foot and the path around the lake is well-maintained with mostly level terrain. During summer months, visitors can rent electric boats, paddle boats, and canoes at the waterfront base.
The lake is home to a population of black poplars, a rare tree species included in a national conservation program. Scientists conduct genetic research on the trees to understand their resilience and preserve the species.
