Remparts de Lescar

The Remparts de Lescar form a medieval defensive ring that encircles the town's historical center with stone walls and multiple towers and gates. The fortification system follows the contours of the hill and includes several distinct defensive structures along its perimeter.

The fortifications began as a Roman installation in the first century and underwent major reconstruction in the fifth century as the empire weakened. Medieval periods brought further reinforcements and modifications to adapt the defenses to evolving military needs.

The fortification walls can be explored on foot along accessible paths that combine flat and sloped sections around the hilltop. Wearing comfortable shoes and bringing weather protection is advisable, especially during rainy or sunny seasons.

The stone walls contain well-preserved medieval defensive details, including distinctive cross-shaped arrow slits and gunports from later centuries. These features reveal how builders adapted their defensive strategy as weapons technology changed over time.
