Nishiki Market, Street market in Kyoto, Japan
Nishiki Market is a narrow covered shopping street in central Kyoto, lined with around one hundred shops selling fresh seafood, local vegetables, knives, and traditional cooking equipment. The passage runs east to west, north of Shijo Avenue, between the Teramachi and Takakura areas.
The market began in the early 14th century as a fish wholesale area and gradually became a place for specialized food vendors. Many of the shops there today are still run by families who have worked in the same spot for generations.
The market is known for its small specialty shops, each devoted to a single type of ingredient such as pickled vegetables, fresh tofu, or wagashi sweets. Walking through in the morning, you often see local cooks doing their daily shopping alongside regular visitors.
The market is easy to reach on foot from the central Kyoto area, just north of Shijo Avenue. Visiting in the morning or early afternoon gives you lighter foot traffic and a fuller selection at the stalls.
The lane follows the path of an old water channel that once ran through the city before being covered over. That origin explains why the passage is so unusually narrow and slightly curved compared to the surrounding streets.
