The five-block shopping street contains more than one hundred specialized stores selling fresh seafood, local produce, knives, and traditional cookware.
The market began as a fish wholesale district in 1310, with many current establishments maintained by the same families through multiple generations.
Each shop specializes in specific ingredients of Kyoto cuisine, including tsukemono pickles, fresh tofu, seasonal vegetables, wagashi sweets, and raw fish.
The market operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, located one block north of Shijo Avenue between Teramachi and Takakura streets.
The narrow passageway extends 400 meters in length and measures only 3.9 meters wide, housing 130 different food vendors and artisans.
