Nishiki Market, Food market in Downtown Kyoto, Japan

Nishiki Market is a linear shopping street in Kyoto with over one hundred stores specializing in fresh seafood, local vegetables, knives, and traditional cooking equipment. The narrow passage winds between shops, revealing craftsmanship and carefully arranged goods displayed in every window.

The market began in the early 14th century as a fish wholesale area and evolved into a hub for specialized food vendors. Many of today's shops are still run by families who have worked there for generations.

The market is the heart of Kyoto's food culture, with each shop devoted to specific ingredients like pickled vegetables, fresh tofu, wagashi sweets, and seafood. You can watch local chefs shopping for their daily supplies, which gives the place its authentic character.

The location is easily accessible on foot, situated north of Shijo Avenue between the Teramachi and Takakura areas. The best time to visit is morning or early afternoon, when crowds are lighter and vendors still have full selections of goods.

The narrow passage was originally a stream that ran through the old town before later being covered over. This hidden history shows itself today in the peculiar shape and layout of the lanes.
