Missile Alert Facility Q-01
Missile Alert Facility Q-01 is an underground command center in Laramie County designed to control nuclear weapons. The site features two connected structures: an above-ground visitor and training building and a deeply buried command capsule embedded in the earth.
The facility was built in the 1960s as part of the US Intercontinental Ballistic Missile program. It played a key role during the Cold War in securing nuclear weapons systems and was later opened to visitors to preserve the legacy of that era.
Access to the underground capsule is limited and guided tours are required to reach the deeper levels. Plan to spend a half day exploring the structures and learning about Cold War operations through displays and exhibits.
The command capsule was engineered to offer survival odds even if the outside world were destroyed by nuclear detonation. This survivability was a critical part of the strategic deterrence system and is highlighted in today's exhibitions.
