Train touristique du Phare de Chassiron, Tourist train in Saint-Denis-d'Oléron, France.
Train touristique du Phare de Chassiron runs through Saint-Denis-d'Oléron with several covered carriages connecting visitors to locations across the island. The route leads from the tourist office to the coast and includes stops at key sights around the area.
The train was established to help visitors reach remote parts of the island including the Chassiron lighthouse at the northern tip. The lighthouse itself was built in the 19th century and has guided ships along the coast for more than 150 years.
On Wednesday afternoons the train stops at a salt marsh and then visits a winemaker who demonstrates production methods on site. Passengers can watch how local goods are made following traditional techniques.
Departures take place at 3:00 PM from the tourist office in Saint-Denis and at 3:15 PM from La Brée-les-Bains, with tickets available at both starting points. On summer evenings the train also runs later with special programmes at the lighthouse.
During July and August the train offers evening trips that include a performance at the lighthouse where a character named Lazor tells stories about shipwreckers. This show takes place right at the base of the tower and lasts around an hour.
