Botanical Garden and Parks of Crete, Botanical garden in Fournes, Greece
Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete is a large botanical space with distinct sections for tropical plants, Mediterranean flora, fruit trees, and vineyards. A winding trail guides visitors through each area, allowing them to explore the range of plants and growing methods.
This land was transformed into a botanical garden after devastating fires in 2003, serving to preserve local and international plant species. The transformation allowed damaged land to recover and become a center for plant conservation and education.
The restaurant serves authentic Cretan dishes prepared with ingredients grown in the surrounding gardens and orchards. Visitors experience traditional local cooking and can trace where their food comes from.
The park sits at the foothills of the White Mountains and is easily accessible; wear comfortable shoes as the trail moves through different elevations. Morning or late afternoon visits are more pleasant when the sun is less intense.
A charred olive tree that survived the devastating fires stands as a monument at the park's center, marking the site's difficult past. This living remnant is surrounded by more than 150 fruit varieties and many Mediterranean plants.
