Assumption Cathedral, Chania

The Assumption Cathedral is a Catholic house of worship in Chania with a three-aisled brick basilica. The building displays neoclassical and Renaissance elements throughout its architecture.

The current building was inaugurated in 1879 and replaced an earlier single-aisled church from 1844 that had been damaged by earthquakes. This reconstruction took place while the city was modernizing its overall infrastructure.

Services here are held in several languages to serve the international community of Chania. This linguistic variety reflects how the city has long drawn people from different parts of the world.

The entrance is located on Halidon Street and is accessed through a small door that leads to an inner courtyard. Visitors should note that this courtyard serves as a central point of orientation.

The Franciscan Capuchin coat of arms is displayed at the entrance and shows the city's religious history under different rulers. This marking is often overlooked but is an important detail of the local past.
